    David Schottenfeld, M.D., John G. Searle Professor of Epidemiology and professor of epidemiology in the School of Public Health, and professor of internal medicine in the Medical School, retired from active faculty status on August 31, 2004.

    Dr. Schottenfeld received his A.B. degree from Hamilton College in 1952, his M.D. degree from Cornell University Medical College in 1956, and his M.Sc. degree from Harvard University in 1963. He served on the faculty of Cornell University Medical College from 1963-86 and on the medical staff of Memorial Hospital in New York City from 1963-86. Dr. Schottenfeld joined the University of Michigan faculty as the John G. Searle Professor of Epidemiology and professor of internal medicine in 1986. He also served as chair of the epidemiology department from 1986-91 and interim chair in 2003. He has directed the graduate summer session program in epidemiology since 1987, and he co-directed the preventive medicine residency program in the School of Public Health.

    Dr. Schottenfeld's leadership and contributions in cancer epidemiology have set the standard for the field. He was editor-in-chief of the definitive cancer epidemiology textbook, Cancer Epidemiology and Prevention, and has more than 135 peer-reviewed publications. He was one of the first to recognize the unique insights to be gained from the study of multiple primary malignancies, and he has devoted a substantial portion of his career to understanding the epidemiology of hormonally responsive cancers. Dr. Schottenfeld has been dedicated to the training of epidemiologists and practitioners of preventive medicine and has provided scientific leadership nationally and internationally. His honors include the Distinguished Achievement Award from the American Society of Preventive Oncology and the Abraham M. Lilienfeld Award from the American College of Epidemiology. He was also recognized by his peers by being elected president of the Society of Epidemiologic Research.

    The Regents now salute this distinguished cancer epidemiologist and educator for his dedicated service by naming David Schottenfeld professor emeritus of epidemiology and professor emeritus of internal medicine.
