Faculty Profile

Aleda (Allie) M. Leis, PhD, MS
- Research Assistant Professor, Epidemiology
Dr. Leis' research focuses on the etiologic intersections of chronic and infectious disease and their synergistic effects, with a particular focus on non-traditional risk pathways for development of metabolic and cardiovascular disease across the lifecourse to inform prevention strategies. Given the major impact of viral disease on the health of populations and the potential for long-term implications, she is particularly interested in the impact of post-viral-infection health on the inflammatory landscape and its relation to development of cardiometabolic disease. She has many years of experience working with large, complex data sources including electronic health record databases, longitudinal cohort studies, and CDC initiatives for respiratory disease surveillance.
- PhD, Epidemiological Science, University of Michigan, 2022
- MS, Biostatistics, Drexel University, 2015
- BS, Mathematics, St. Bonaventure University, 2013
Research Interests:
Chronic diseases including obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular disease; bone health;
clinical epidemiology of viral diseases including influenza and COVID-19; aging; women's
health
Research Projects:
Dr. Leis' work on metabolic health and aging in women utilizes the rich 25+ year Study
of Women's Health Across the Nation (SWAN) longitudinal cohort, on which she is a
co-investigator. She serves as site-PI for the Surveillance of Respiratory Infections’
Sequelae (SunRISE) program, examining the long-term effects of acute respiratory viral
infection following respiratory syncytial virus, COVID-19, and influenza. Dr. Leis
is an active member of the AI & Digital Health Innovation research network at Michigan
Medicine, utilizing the unique Precision Health data resources to examine variability
in physical activity and patterns of recovery of physical functioning following acute
respiratory illness as PI of a MICHR-funded K12 award. Finally, she is co-investigator
on the Michigan-Ford Initiative to Measure Vaccine Effectiveness (MFIVE): Seasonal
Influenza, COVID-19 and Respiratory Virus Vaccines CDC influenza vaccine network.
