Kashvi Gupta didn’t like needles and hated the smell of the hospital. As a physician pursuing a degree in public health, she knows that her own bold steps and her encounters with patients will change her.
When Lisa Richardson began asking herself why black women died more frequently from breast cancer than white women, her public health training kicked into gear. She knew the question had to be answered—and she knew how to make it into a research question.
“To be honest, biostatistics was a huge risk. I was intrigued by the idea of using my math skills to serve what one might call a greater purpose. But planning a career in a field I was just beginning to understand was definitely a risk,” says Beesley.
“As I interpreted for my mother throughout the recovery process, the inaccessible language used by doctors and nurses illuminated the challenges my mother and many others face as deaf individuals within the health system,” Johnson says.
A five-time Big Ten Athlete of the Year, Erin Finn has built a storied athletic career at the University of Michigan. Now pursuing a MPH in Epidemiology, she shares her passion for science and her aim to bring public health training to medical practice.
