Undergraduate Internships
Undergraduate students at the University of Michigan School of Public Health are not required to complete a summer internship as part of their degree; however, internships provide valuable opportunities to explore various career options, gain public health skills, and make valuable skills. The Michigan Public Health Careers Office is available to support Undergraduate Students in finding valuable internship opportunities. When searching for Internships on the Michigan Public Health Careers Gateway, use the filter “Type of Job” and select “Undergraduate Internship.”
If you are an international student on an F1 visa applying for an internship that is not located at the University of Michigan, you will need to file a Curricular Practical Training (CPT) visa application through the University of Michigan's International Center.

Undergrad Internship Funding
Overview
The School of Public Health Undergraduate Internship Award supports Michigan Public Health undergraduate students pursuing a spring or summer internship experience.Scholarship funds can be used to assist with the costs associated with completing an internship. These could include housing, travel, and other necessary supplies.
Application Deadline
The application typically closes at the end of May each year. Applications will be reviewed and decisions will be made on a rolling basis. Application review will take place weekly beginning in April.
Amount
Up to $5,000 in funding is available, award amounts vary depending on the cost of a student's internship experience and their financial need.
Apply for School of Public Health Undergraduate Internship Funding
To be eligible for funding, applicants must:
- Be enrolled as an undergraduate student in the School of Public Health; newly matriculated sophomores are also eligible to apply for funding. Supplemental studies and graduate students are not eligible to apply
- Be returning to Michigan Public Health as an enrolled undergraduate student in the fall term following the internship (NOTE: students participating in an internship after graduation do not qualify)
- Have completed at least one semester at the University of Michigan - Ann Arbor
- Be accepted to a spring/summer internship program. Applicants are required to provide proof of acceptance before a funding decision will be granted
- Internship duration must be a minimum of six weeks
- Internship must require you to work at least 25 hours per week
- Internship location may be domestic or international
- Internship may be paid or unpaid
- Provide your internship offer letter or confirmation of participation
- Statement of purpose explaining how the internship will enhance your public health education
- Detail your anticipated internship-related expenses
- Provide a copy of your financial award notice
- Ensure compliance with University of Michigan travel safety policies, including but not limited to travel registration, Safety Plan, and University of Michigan Travel Abroad Health Insurance (if applicable)
School of Public Health Undergraduate Internship Award decisions are determined based on the strength of applicants' statement of purpose, academic previous award history, level of financial need, and the perceived relevance of the experience to public health.
- Women's Health Internship Funding: Undergraduate and graduate students at the School of Public Health with an internship related to the field of women's health are eligible to apply for the Women's Health Internship Fund. Applications are usually due in April. The amount of funding received depends on the year, but has been up to $1,000.
- Region V Public Health Training Center Funding: Undergraduate and graduate students at the School of Public Health who have accepted unpaid or underpaid summer field placements in a Region V state (MI, OH, IN, IL, WI, MN) are eligible to apply. Applications are usually due in April. A $3,500 stipend is included upon acceptance into the program.
