Goals of the Certificate

This certificate focuses on the interconnections between the environment, climate, health outcomes, and social and environmental justice. The certificate aims to equip master’s students with interdisciplinary skills to address the multifaceted challenges posed by climate change, environmental degradation, and the resultant adverse impacts on public health. Certificate holders will be able to devise innovative climate solutions, advocate for equitable policies, and contribute to the sustainable well-being and health of communities.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Explain climate science and climate data
  2. Explore and critique climate policy (domestically and globally)
  3. Discuss climate and health equity connections
  4. Explore sustainable practices, community impact and resilience, emergency preparedness
  5. Discuss climate adaptation and mitigation locally and globally
  6. Explore climate justice, advocacy strategies and challenges
  7. Discuss climate assessment practices and tools

Competencies

The following skill sets will be attained by the certificate enrollees - they will be able to:

  1. Explain the fundamental principles of climate science, including the ability to explain complex climate data and trends effectively to diverse audiences
  2. Analyze climate policies at local, national and international levels, including evaluating their effectiveness for promoting equitable solutions for health and well-being
  3. Articulate the connections between climate change, health outcomes and health equity including how climate change disproportionately affects vulnerable populations and contributes to health disparities.
  4. Develop sustainable practices that enhance community resilience and emergency preparedness
  5. Critique strategies for climate adaptation and mitigation at local, regional and global levels.
  6. Develop strategies to engage stakeholders to promote climate justice, exploring the challenges and strategies involved in achieving equitable solutions
  7. Apply climate assessment practices and tools to evaluate climate risks and support decision-making processes
