Tenure-Track Assistant Professor Position in Environmental Health Sciences

The School of Public Health at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in the Department of Environmental Health Sciences (EHS). To protect populations where they live, work, and grow, we welcome collaborative and exceptionally creative faculty with interests and expertise in all areas of environmental health sciences.

The Department of Environmental Health Sciences at the University of Michigan is engaged in a broad range of research in environmental and occupational health science, including risk and exposure assessment, toxicology, epigenetics, environmental/atmospheric chemistry, microbiology, environmental epidemiology, industrial hygiene, environmental health policy, environmental justice, climate change, sustainability, and global environmental health. Our interdisciplinary curriculum and co-curricular opportunities prepare students to lead sustainable action, shape public health policy, and pursue jobs in public health practice, research, advocacy, medicine, and beyond.

Areas of research interest include exposure science, broadly defined and applied to hazardous agents encountered in environmental or occupational settings (domestic or global); methodologies for characterizing risks to emerging hazards, particularly among vulnerable populations - including historically marginalized and minoritized populations; innovative technologies for assessing simultaneous and/or cumulative exposures to multiple agents (e.g., mixtures, control banding) and consequent biological impacts; climate change and health; sustainability and health; data science; and “omics” approaches relating chronic human diseases to endogenous and exogenous factors via analyses of biomarkers and mechanistic pathways (e.g., exposome). 

Areas of teaching interest in any of the research interest areas listed above or additional innovative and emerging areas of environmental health sciences would be suitable for our lecture, analytical, and/or laboratory courses.

PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATIONS 

Required qualifications include a doctoral degree in a relevant public health, scientific, or engineering discipline; a strong record of environmental health research; evidence of a commitment to teaching excellence and mentorship; the ability to work collaboratively across disciplines; and a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in higher education. 

RESPONSIBILITIES 

The successful candidate will be expected to establish a strong, extramurally funded independent research program; collaborate with colleagues; develop and teach graduate-level and possibly undergraduate-level courses; mentor graduate students and post-doctoral fellows in research; and contribute to the diversity of scholarly activities within the department, school, and university. 

ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT 

The Department of Environmental Health Sciences is the home of a NIOSH-funded Center for Occupational Health and Safety Engineering (COHSE), an NIEHS-funded Environmental Toxicology and Epidemiology Training Grant (ETEP), an NIEHS-funded Michigan Center on Lifestage Environmental Exposures and Disease (M-LEEaD), an NCI-funded Michigan Cancer and Research on the Environment Study (MI-CARES), and an ABET-accredited Industrial Hygiene Program, in addition to numerous investigator-initiated research projects funded by governmental agencies, foundations, and private sector institutions. The Department offers PhD, MS, and MPH degree programs and participates in the school-wide undergraduate and online MPH degree programs. We also offer department and school level faculty mentoring programs designed to position new faculty for success.
