Share Your Experience

We encourage students to document and share their global experiences through journaling, blogging, photography, videography, and social media. Plan to take photos throughout your internship and share those that you think are the best photos of public health in the part of the world you are visiting. If you aren't traveling abroad for your experience, documenting, reflecting, and sharing about your day-to-day can help enhance your learning.

We would love to feature your images on our social media channels, in newsletters, features, presentations, and reports. We also encourage you to participate in the annual campus-wide Global Photo Showcase which offers an opportunity to display your best photo for a chance to win prizes, typically held in November. Our Marcomm team may also hold a photo contest to promote your experience in school-wide and alumni publications. Photos should be related to your internship experience, but can also include personal travel related to that experience. We encourage incorporating University of Michigan items where appropriate, such as branded clothing, flags, or pennants, but they are not required.

Marketing Tools

Our Marketing and Communications team has resources and suport available to make your content professional and polished, such as templates, logos and language guidance. Some resources may be found on The Heights Marketing Tools page

Permissions & Acknowledgements

Photo and Video Permissions

There is no need to use a formal consent form in public spaces, although you may want to inform people about the possibiilty of being filmed or photographed in advance. You may also use photos where individuals are in the background or vicinity, but not the main focus of photos, such as the backs of heads or in the distance. Most of the time, for adults, permission can be achieved through verbal consent and you will not need to produce photo consent forms to share such photos.

Formal consent forms ARE REQUIRED for minor subjects under 18 years of age, signed by a parent or guardian. For this reason, we recommend you avoid photographing children unless it's extremely relevant to your work and your partners agree that parental consent is appropriate to seek.

Either way, you may wish to dowload some consent forms before you depart, which can be found below.

  1. Photo Consent Form (PDF / paper form)
  2. Photo Consent Form for Minors under 16 Years of Age (PDF / paper form)
  3. Pocket-Sized Photo Consent Form (general U-M form; not SPH specific)

Acknowledgements

Many global internship opportunities are made possible by the generosity of donors. We encourage you to acknowledge any support you receive as a token of appreciation in any features or posts about your internship in official U-M channels. The specific donors of the funds you received are named in the award letter you received from our team.

How to Submit Photos

We greatly appreciate if you can appropriately label your photo file names to make it easier for us to store and find them for future use:

  • Use filename format: [YourLastName-YourFirstName]-[Location]-[Date]
  • Submit as a jpg image with high resolution. Embedding photos in email or other documents reduces the quality. Share a photo as an attachment or using a file sharing program such as Google Drive.
  • Email photos to sphglobalhealth@umich.edu or shared via Google Drive Folder with kiransd@umich.edu

By submitting your photos, you are granting U-M Public Health full permission to use these photos at our discretion in any official marketing and communications materials. You retain ownership of the photos and can use them for whatever purposes you choose.
