Faculty Resources

The School of Public Health, through Global Public Health, has a process in place for reviewing faculty proposals to establish Institutional International Memorandum of Understanding with institutions and agencies worldwide. Approval of MOUs will be based on their alignment with established guidelines and potential for contributing to the school's overall global public health mission and strategic direction. Faculty may reach out to Global Public Health about other types of international agreements and documents that may be needed for student placements or research.

Global Public Health in consultation with the U-M Provost's Global Engagement Team created an Internal Emergency Response and Communication Protocol for the School of Public Health. (Accessible by the U-M Community). This document can be used as guidance by faculty mentoring students who may have an emergency while abroad. 

The global public health appointments were developed to lend visible institutional support to faculty working in global public health. Designation as a Professor (Associate/Assistant/Clinical/Research Professor) of Global Public Health is reserved for faculty with a primary faculty appointment at the School of Public Health with substantial global health experience and is commensurate with the faculty member's appointment at the School of Public Health. Applications are due annually on June 1 and require a nomination from the applicant's departmental chair. Annual solicitation of applications for faculty pilot research projects in global health are offered by Global Public Health. Priority for funding is typically, although not exclusively, given to proposals from junior faculty. Applications are due annually in September and accepted on a rolling basis if funds remain. Awards are intended to support postdoctoral fellows who will complete research in global public health, especially projects with a focus in low- and middle-income countries. Postdoctoral candidates require nomination and mentoring by a University of Michigan faculty member whose primary appointment is through UM-SPH. Up to two application nominations may be submitted from each UM-SPH department chair. Funding support is available for no more than two postdoctoral fellows each academic year. Applications are due annually in February. The Tappe Postdoctoral Fellowship program has been suspended for the 2025 and 2026 application cycles.    

Doctoral Travel Funding
Students enrolled in doctoral-level programs at the School of Public Health who wish to conduct internationally based pre-dissertation research, which does not support faculty research, are eligible to apply for a travel award. Applications are due annually in March. 

Master's Level Internship Funding
Global Public Health competitively awards funding to master's level students to complete a minimum of an eight-week research, applied service, management or policy internship internationally. Funding may be used by students who want to join a faculty research project overseas. Applications are due annually in February.
