Jennifer Floyd, MPH ’06

During her career in public health, Jennifer D. Floyd, MPH ‘06, has seen many innovations and experienced a broad range of new challenges. The COVID-19 pandemic hit the public health field like a seismic jolt, the repercussions of which amounted to a horizon filled with uncertainty. Although her work environment and the guidelines she was committed to follow remained in a near constant state of flux, Floyd said it was vital to remain true to her commitment to serve the public good.

Kiran Szekeres is the Director of the Office of Foundational Learning and Practice in the Department of Health Behavior and Health Education at the University of Michigan School of Public Health. She earned a Master of Public Health from Michigan Public Health and was the 2022 recipient of the Eugene Feingold Excellence in Diversity Award. This award honors various members of the School of Public Health community for their extraordinary dedication to developing diversity at the University of Michigan.

Global Health Epidemiology student's career path recalibrated after pair of internships

Abbey Hutton

Abbey Hutton always believed that her future was somewhere in the health and medical field. She earned a Bachelor of Science in Microbiology from the University of Michigan, graduating in 2021. Hutton, who was an Academic All-Big Ten honoree for three straight seasons with the Michigan field hockey team, is on track to earn a Master in Public Health in Global Health Epidemiology in 2023.

Every experience—from enrolling in the University of Michigan as an undergraduate and continuing her graduate studies in the School of Public Health, to working as a Surveillance Epidemiologist ORISE Fellow for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention—has helped shape her career path.

In high school Josie Lee was surprised by the lack of mental health resources and support at her high school. When she began her freshman year of college, she knew she wanted to improve the system. It wasn't until she took her first public health course at the University of Michigan that she knew how she could change the system.

Sidonie Kilpatrick

Sidonie Kilpatrick, MPH ’20, did not follow a family member’s path into the healthcare profession. She did not receive inspiration from a popular television series that showed healthcare workers in heroic roles, nor did her high school classes in related subjects provide the illumination that would send her on to study and work on critical matters of public health. Instead, she lived it.
