Anthony reappointed as Rubin Department Chair at Michigan Public Health

Denise Anthony

The University of Michigan’s Board of Regents has approved the reappointment of Denise Anthony as the Rubin Department Chair of Health Management and Policy at the University of Michigan School of Public Health. Anthony is set to serve an additional three-year term starting September 1, 2025, through August 31, 2028.

Anthony, who holds multiple appointments across the university, serves as Professor of Health Management and Policy with tenure at the School of Public Health, Professor of Sociology without tenure at the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts, and Professor of Information without tenure at the School of Information. She joined the University of Michigan in 2018, bringing a distinguished record of leadership and scholarship from her previous roles at Dartmouth, including chair of sociology and vice provost for academic initiatives.

Anthony's research sits at the intersection of technology, trust, and health, examining how cooperation, privacy, and trust shape behavior around digital information, particularly in healthcare settings. Her interdisciplinary work explores the impact of electronic medical records, patient portals, telehealth, and smart technologies on health systems, provider-patient relationships, and data security. Her research has been supported by the National Science Foundation and other funders, with publications spanning sociology, health policy, and computer science in journals such as American Sociological Review, Social Science and Medicine, and Health Affairs.

As department chair, Anthony has prioritized the student experience, led department-wide strategic planning, and recruited multiple new faculty members. She has also deepened alumni engagement and driven philanthropic growth to expand opportunities for students and strengthen the department's impact.

The Rubin Department Chair position was established through a transformational gift by alumni Amir Rubin, MHSA '96, MBA '96, and Nicole Rubin, MHSA '95.

At the Sept. 18 Board of Regents meeting, the Regents also approved the appointment of Safyer McKenzie-Sampson as the John G. Searle Assistant Professor of Health Behavior & Health Equity and the reappointment of Matthew L. Boulton as Senior Associate Dean for Global Public Health.
