University of Michigan School of Public Health ranks #4 among best schools of public health in the nation

The University of Michigan is ranked #4 in the nation by U.S. News and World Report's 2026 ranking.

The school also ranked highly in several specialty areas

The University of Michigan School of Public Health has been ranked #4 in U.S. News & World Report’s 2026 list of Best Public Health Schools. This is the third consecutive year with a ranking in the top-5.

Michigan Public Health is tied for #4 with the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. The Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health is ranked #1. 

"Public health education is critical right now and it is gratifying to be recognized by our peers as a leading institution," said Lynda Lisabeth, interim dean of Michigan Public Health. "We remain committed to educating and training future public health leaders who will positively impact the health of the world. We are honored to do this work even when external forces attempt to disparage it." 

As part of its best Public Health School rankings, U.S. News recognizes schools with the top specialty fields within public health. This year, Michigan Public Health ranked among the top programs in each specialty:

  • Biostatistics: #3
  • Environmental Health Science: #6
  • Epidemiology: #5
  • Health Policy and Management: #4
  • Social and Behavioral Sciences: #4

U.S. News also released a new list of Best Health Care Management Programs, with Michigan Public Health’s program ranking #4.

U.S. News rankings of accredited schools and programs of public health are based on the results of peer assessment surveys sent to deans, other administrators, and faculty at accredited degree programs and schools of public health. Respondents are asked to rate the academic quality of programs on a scale of 1 (marginal) to 5 (outstanding), and the schools with the highest average scores appear in the rankings.
