A wide range of funding opportunities at the School of Public Health and campus-wide are available to support students pursuing practice and research internships and other experiential learning. 


Funding for domestic Internships and other experiences Through the School of PUblic Health 

This award is meant to help ease the burden for students (undergraduate, masters or doctoral) with unpaid or underpaid internships. Learn more about the Michigan Public Health Internship Fund. Application opens mid-March. 

This award is available to support students (undergraduate, masters or doctoral) pursuing internships with a women’s health focus. Learn more about the Women's Health Internship Fund. Application opens mid-March.

The Region V Public Health Training Center awards funding for undergraduate and graduate student experiences (Ex., field placements, collaborative projects) that are with a public health organization located in or serving a medically underserved community in Region V (Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio, and Wisconsin) and build organizational capacity to address social determinants of health. Applications open on March 2, 2026. 


Funding for international opportunities at the school of public health

Public Health Practice & Global Engagement is pleased to offer master's level international internship funding support for University of Michigan School of Public Health residential master's students to complete internships that fulfill a curricular requirement for a master's degree program.

Public Health Practice & Global Engagement competitively awards doctoral international travel stipends for University of Michigan School of Public Health doctoral students in the first two years of their program. Funding is intended to support preliminary visits to prospective overseas dissertation sites, to facilitate planning doctoral dissertation research or to support other research-related expenses for dissertation preparation.

Public Health Practice & Global Engagement offers funding support for a one-year postdoctoral fellowship in global public health at the University of Michigan School of Public Health (UM-SPH). Awards are intended to support postdoctoral fellows who will complete research in global public health, especially projects with a focus on low- and middle-income countries. Postdoctoral candidates require nomination and mentoring by a University of Michigan faculty member whose primary appointment is through UM-SPH. The Tappe Postdoctoral Fellowship program has been suspended for the 2025 and 2026 application cycles.    

Public Health Practice & Global Engagement administers a global public health conference travel funding program for School of Public Health graduate students. A limited number of awards are available, and funds are intended to support graduate students who have been invited to present their research via an oral or poster presentation at a recognized global public health conference in the U.S. or abroad. 

The University of Michigan Minority Health and Health Disparities Research Training (MHRT) Program, funded by the National Institutes of Health, supports the research training of students at all academic levels interested in global public health.
